Your Google Business Profile has been reinstated. The hard work is done — but this is also the perfect moment to rebuild your profile better than it was before the suspension.
A freshly reinstated GBP is a clean slate. With the right optimization, many businesses we work with end up ranking higher after reinstatement than they did before the suspension. Here is the complete post-reinstatement optimization guide.
Wait Before You Edit
The first rule of post-reinstatement optimization is patience. Wait at least 14 days before making any changes to your profile. Editing your listing immediately after reinstatement can trigger the same automated flags that caused your suspension.
During this waiting period, focus on gathering the materials you will need for optimization: new photos, responses to any unanswered reviews, and updated business information.
Core Profile Optimization (Week 2–3)
Business Description
Your business description is 750 characters that tell Google and customers exactly what you do, where you do it, and why you are the best choice. Include your primary service keywords naturally, mention your service areas, and include a clear call to action.
Example of a weak description: “We are a plumbing company serving the local area. Call us for all your plumbing needs.”
Example of a strong description: “Licensed master plumber serving Houston, TX and surrounding Harris County since 2009. We specialize in emergency plumbing repair, water heater installation, drain cleaning, and bathroom remodeling for residential and commercial clients. Available 24/7 for emergencies. Google-verified, BBB-accredited, and fully insured. Call for a free estimate.”
Category Selection
Your primary category is the most important ranking factor in your GBP. It must reflect your core service. Beyond the primary category, you can add up to nine additional categories — use all of them, selecting the most relevant secondary services you offer.
Attributes
GBP attributes let you highlight specific features of your business. Enable every attribute that accurately describes your business — online appointments, free consultations, veteran-owned, women-led, Black-owned, and so on. These attributes appear in your listing and can be search filters, making your listing more visible to relevant customers.
Photo Strategy (Week 2–4)
Photos are one of the highest-impact optimization areas. Listings with more than 100 photos receive significantly more calls than those with fewer than 10.
Upload photos in these categories:
- Exterior photos — Your building from multiple angles at different times of day
- Interior photos — Your reception, work areas, and any client-facing spaces
- Team photos — Your staff in professional settings
- Work-in-progress photos — Your team actually doing the work you are selling
- Before and after photos — Powerful for service businesses showing results
- Equipment and vehicle photos — Particularly important for service area businesses
Aim to add 5–10 new photos per week consistently rather than uploading 100 photos all at once.
Google Posts (Ongoing)
Google Posts are short updates — similar to social media posts — that appear directly on your GBP listing. Consistent posting signals to Google that your listing is active and managed by a real business.
Post types to use regularly:
- What’s New posts — Announce service updates, seasonal offerings, or business news
- Offer posts — Promote specific discounts or packages
- Event posts — Webinars, community events, or open houses
Post at least twice per week. Posts expire after 7 days, so consistent posting is required to keep your listing looking active.
Review Strategy
Reviews are the second most important ranking factor in local search after proximity. A reinstated listing with strong reviews recovers rankings faster.
Request reviews from every satisfied customer. The simplest approach is a direct link — create a short link that goes directly to your Google review form and share it via text or email after every job.
Respond to every review. Google favors active, engaged listings. Responding to reviews — both positive and negative — signals that you are a real, attentive business owner.
Address negative reviews professionally. A thoughtful response to a negative review often impresses potential customers more than the review itself damages you.
Q&A Section
The Questions and Answers section of your GBP is underutilized by most businesses. You can add your own questions and answer them — essentially creating a FAQ section directly on your Google listing.
Add 10–15 questions covering the queries your customers most commonly ask: your pricing structure, service area, response time, licensing and insurance, payment methods, and guarantees.
Monthly Monitoring
After optimization, your listing needs monthly maintenance:
- Update your hours for holidays and seasonal changes
- Upload new photos consistently
- Respond to new reviews
- Publish two Google Posts per week
- Check for unauthorized edits to your listing (Google allows public edits which can sometimes be made by competitors)
