Video verification is one of the most misunderstood parts of the Google Business Profile process. When Google sends you a video verification request instead of reinstating your listing directly, many business owners panic — and then fail the verification because they were not prepared.
This guide covers everything you need to know to pass GBP video verification on the first attempt.
What Is GBP Video Verification?
Google video verification is a live video call with a Google reviewer who will ask you to walk through your business location and show specific elements to confirm your business is real and operating as described in your profile.
Google began rolling out video verification more widely in 2023 and has significantly expanded its use in 2025 and 2026 as part of its effort to combat fraudulent listings. It is now the standard verification method for many business types, particularly in categories historically associated with spam such as locksmiths, plumbers, electricians, legal services, and financial services.
What the Google Reviewer Will Ask You to Show
Based on our experience preparing hundreds of businesses for video verification, the reviewer will typically ask you to demonstrate:
Physical location proof:
- The exterior of your building including your business sign
- Your business entrance and any visible signage at the entrance
- The street view from your entrance so the reviewer can cross-reference with Google Maps
Interior proof:
- Your reception or main working area
- Any industry-specific equipment relevant to your business type (a salon chair for a hair salon, diagnostic equipment for an auto repair shop, a commercial kitchen for a restaurant)
- Your business licence displayed on the wall if applicable in your state
Operational proof:
- A computer or work station showing your business software or customer management system
- Business cards or letterhead with your business name and address
- Any branded vehicles or equipment
Ownership proof:
- You or a staff member in the business location
- Any staff uniforms or branded clothing
How to Prepare for Your Video Verification
24–48 Hours Before the Call
Clean and organise your premises. The reviewer is forming a judgment about whether your business is legitimate within a few minutes. A cluttered, disorganised space raises doubts even if your documentation is perfect.
Locate all your signage. Your business name on your exterior sign must exactly match the name on your Google Business Profile. If there is any discrepancy, this is a failure point.
Print your documentation. Have printed copies of your business registration, business licence, and any relevant certifications visible and accessible during the call.
Test your device and internet connection. Video verification is done through a Google Meet link sent to your email. Test on the device you plan to use from the location of your business. Poor video quality or dropped connections can result in a failed verification.
Plan your walkthrough route. Know exactly which rooms you will show and in what order. Practice the walkthrough at least twice so it feels natural and confident.
The Day of the Call
Schedule your verification call for a time when your business looks actively operational — staff present, equipment in use or clearly visible, any client-facing areas presentable.
Answer the Google Meet link promptly. Reviewers are working through many calls and may move on quickly if you do not answer.
Begin the call confidently by stating your name, your role in the business, your business name, and your business address. Do not wait for the reviewer to guide you — take control of the call and walk them through your verification systematically.
Common Reasons Video Verification Fails
Signage mismatch: Your exterior sign says “Smith & Sons Electrical” but your GBP listing says “Smith Electrical Services.” Even small differences can cause a failure.
Inability to access the location: Attempting verification from a location other than your registered business address. The reviewer will check your surroundings against your listed address.
No physical presence for home-based businesses: If you operate from home and your home does not have visible business signage or a dedicated business space, video verification is extremely difficult. This is where you need to discuss whether to convert to a service area business listing instead.
Technical issues: Poor lighting, unstable internet, or a shaky phone camera can prevent the reviewer from seeing what they need to see clearly.
Nervousness causing incomplete responses: Reviewers are assessing confidence and clarity. Hesitant or incomplete responses to their questions raise flags.
What To Do If Video Verification Fails
If your verification call ends without a positive outcome, do not immediately request another call. Take time to understand what went wrong before attempting again.
